From Our Bookshelves: The Hidden Life of Trees
One For Teachers – The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben
I’d heard a lot about this book from several friends and was curious! This book turned out to be a very interesting read, revealing a secret world of trees and the forest. My walks in nature now have me reconsidering my notion of “ecosystems.” I think insights shared about the complex communication, relationships and survival strategies amongst trees in a forest will spark your own wonder and curiosity and inspire classroom discussions about the importance of observation and the interconnectedness of all things!
One For Students – Tremendous: Diary of a Not Yet Mighty Oak by Bridget Heos
With heart, humour and some science too, Tremendous invites readers to join a small acorn on its journey to becoming a mighty oak tree! Readers will feel like insiders as they listen to this story presented in a diary format. Colourful illustrations add a great sense of the seasons as the acorn shares behind the scenes insights into its growth over the years. This picture book ties in nicely with the Hidden Life of Trees and Can You Hear the Trees Talking? revealing a sense of family and community that exists amongst the trees in a forest and could be a great discussion starter for ecosystems or plant life unit.
